Online Crochet Classes

There are a lot of options available for those who want to learn how to crochet or improve their knowledge base. I have taken several online crochet classes and have found value in each and every one.

Here you will find a list of the classes that I have personally taken or ones that I trust, even if haven’t taken the class myself.

When I first re-learned how to crochet from YouTube videos, I knew that I had some gaps in my knowledge. But I’m the kind of person that wants to make sure that what I know is correct.

I quickly found Craftsy and was blown away by all the different classes they offered.

You will find courses on crocheting, knitting, baking, photography, sewing, and quilting, just to name a few.

Each class is taught by an expert in their field and the production value is exceptional.

Here are a few of the classes I have personally taken:

I’ve also taken additional classes on other subjects and found each one to be comprehensive and thorough.

In addition to the above classes you might like these offerings:

What’s nice is that you can search for the classes you want to take before commiting to any cost. You can also watch a preview of the class to see if you like the teacher and style of the course.

Cost of Craftsy

Craftsy offers two different payment options. You can either pay by the month or by the year. I have opted to do the full year.

As of right now, March 2021, the monthly price is $7.99/month or $79.99/year.

At one point they were offering their Premium annual membership for only $2 for the first year and then the full price for subsequent years. I’m not sure if they are still offering that price, but it would be worth looking into. It could be that this was only offered to previous Premium members.

“Skillshare is an online learning community where anyone can discover, take, or even teach a class. Anyone can join Skillshare to start watching online classes, create projects, and even become a teacher. “

— Skillshare

I have taken several Skillshare classes on different subjects like photography and drawing. There are so many amazing classes and instructors on this platform.

There are tons of crochet classes from beginner courses to more project specific classes.

One thing to note is that anyone can teach on Skillshare. Most of the instructors are experts in their fields, but they aren’t vetted by Skillshare.

You will find classes by Toni Lipsey from TLYarn Crafts and Kristina Turner from Tiny Curl, who are both legit crochet queens.

One metric to look for is how many students have enrolled in the class you’re interested in. That will help you find classes that others are finding helpful and it may be a good one for you to check out as well.

Cost of Skillshare

Skillshare has different pricing options. If you just want to sign up month by month, the current price is $19/month. The better deal is the yearly membership that in total is $99, but equals out to only $8.25/month.

The great thing is that you can get a fourteen day free trial and decide which option is best for you.

Craft Yarn Council – Certified Crochet Instructor

You may be wondering why I included the Certified Crochet Instructor program from the Craft Yarn Council.

The reason is that I learned so very much by enrolling in this course. I was an intermediate crocheter before I began, but grew so much in my confidence and expertise.

With the correspondence course, I worked through the program at my own pace.

I enrolled in the Level 1 Crochet Curriculum:

Level I-Instructor: Crochet Curriculum Covers teaching basics, writing a lesson plan, a review of basic stitches, increases and decreases, pattern stitches and crocheting in the round. In addition to a review of their homework assignments and testing by their master teacher, students must complete a minimum of 15 hours of student teaching to receive a basic Certificate of Participation, which qualifies them to teach beginner classes.”

There are two levels for both crocheting and knitting. They do offer an in-person option, but I believe most of their students opt for the correspondence course.

Cost of the Certified Crochet Instructor Program

Each correspondence level is $85. Right now the program seems to only be offered to US and Canada residents. If you’re outside of these areas I would contact them to see if this option is available in your area.

Creative Bug

When searching for online crochet classes, the one that kept coming to the top of the list was Creative Bug. While I have no personal experience with this platform, I’m thoroughly impressed with their offerings.

“Creativebug is your go-to resource for high-quality, on-trend arts and crafts instructional videos. For as little as 16¢ a day you get on-demand access to our full library 1,000+ art and craft classes for artists and makers of all levels. With your membership, you’ll enjoy award-winning HD instructional videos on drawing, painting, sewing, knitting, crochet, quilting, baking and more. — Creative Bug

You will find well known teachers such as Edie Eckman, Marly Bird, Twinkie Chan and Wool and the Gang.

Each class has a star rating so you can see how many people have enjoyed the classes. Also, there are so many amigurumi classes, the most I’ve seen of any online crochet class platforms.

Cost of Creative Bug

When you subscribe with Creative Bug, you will get two months free and then the cost is $7.95/month (as of March 2021). The website states that you can cancel at any time.

Annie’s Online Crochet Classes

Annie’s is a well known online platform for all things crafting. They offer classes in crocheting, knitting, quilting, sewing and needlework.

— Annie’s Creative Studio

Their online crochet classes are taught by some of the best in the industry. They offer classes on amigurumi, mandalas, sweaters and cables, just to name a few.

Cost of Annie’s Online Classes

Annie’s offers a fifteen day free trial and then the price is $7.99/month. You can also cancel your membership at any time.

Crocheting 101

Although I have no actual experience with Crocheting 101, I wanted to include it for those of you who want or need a free option.

“Crocheting 101 was built to accommodate any kind of learning style. Not only does each Chapter and Project come with a full video, but the entire thing is also offered as a free, downloadable ebook where you can see the written instructions and pictures, so you can go at your own pace.”

— Crocheting 101

What I like about this option is that it contains video lessons as well as a free downloadable Ebook. Having both options is really nice and allows people to learn both ways.

I also like that the final test is an actual crochet project. The website states that you will incorporate all that you learned into this pattern.

Cost of Crocheting 101

The cost of Crocheting 101 is completely free. I know, hard to believe.

If you do take this class (or have in the past) I would love to hear from you and get your opinion about the course.

Udemy Crochet Classes

I’ve been seeing a lot of commercials for Udemy lately, so I decided to check them out for myself.

Initially it looks a bit like Skillshare in that they offer classes on lots of different topics and anyone is allowed to teach a class.

The classes look like they vary from very high production value, to very amateur. I found the search engine to not be very accurate. When looking for amigurumi courses on Udemy, I got classes about amigurumi, but also “How to Crochet a Blanket”, “Fundamentals of Tapestry Crochet” & “Heritage Crochet Lace”, just to name a few.

I do believe you can find good online crochet classes on Udemy, but it just might take a little more effort to find them.

Cost of Udemy

What looks to be different is that there doesn’t seem to be a monthly/yearly subscription. From what I can find, you must purchase classes individually. The courses are reasonably priced with most classes being anywhere from $11.99 – $19.99. They also offer a 30 day money back guarantee.

Online Crochet Classes

While this isn’t an exhaustive list, I hope you found this one somewhat helpful.

Thankfully these days we have a lot of options for learning online and these are some of the ones I thought you might like to.

Happy Stitching!
