Which is the Fastest Crochet Hook? A Speed Test Challenge

Sharing is caring!

Have you ever wondered which hook is the fastest crochet hook? I’m putting my collection of hooks to the test to find out which ones can whip through stitches like a pro. From aluminum classics to ergonomic designs, I’ll time each hook and reveal the ultimate speed champion—because when it comes to crochet, every second counts!

Have you ever wondered if your crochet hook is secretly holding you back from becoming a faster crocheter? I mean, sure, it’s not a race… unless it is! Today, I’m pulling out my crochet hook collection to figure out which one deserves the title of “Speed Champion”.

Will it be my trusty Clover Amour, the fancy Furls ergonomic hook that promises comfort and speed, or maybe its the handmade crochet hook made of Purpleheart and walnut wood?

Which is the Fastest Crochet Hook?

In total I’m testing 13 different crochet hooks and I would bet that many of them you’ll be familiar with.

I’ll be timing myself as I crochet with each hook, all in the name of crochet curiosity! Which one will help me fly through those rows the fastest? Which one will stumble under the pressure?

Grab your favorite hook (or maybe a snack if you’re more of a spectator), and let’s see if the right crochet hook can turn you into a speed-demon stitcher. Let the test begin!

It’s Not All About Speed

Before we begin I want to clarify that speed is not the only factor I consider when choosing a crochet hook. In fact, I would argue that it’s one of the least important factors for most of us crocheters.

But if there is a difference in the speed of these hooks I will probably keep that in the back of my mind when I start a new crochet project.

Factors That Affect Crochet Hook Speed

There are several factors can might influence how fast a crochet hook performs. Here’s a breakdown of a few of the the key contributors that I’ve identified:

  • Material of the Hook Itself – we are testing metal, wood and even plastic crochet hooks
  • Inline vs. Tapered
  • Handle Design

Clover Amour

This tapered crochet hook is a favorite amongst crocheters. In fact, it’s one of my personal favorite crochet hooks for so many different projects.

Clover Amour crochet hooks are known for their ergonomic, soft-grip handles and smooth aluminum metal, making them comfortable to use for long crochet sessions.

Their color-coded handles help with easy size identification, and they have a slightly pointed tip, which some crocheters love (I happen to be one of them). They also have the letter and mm sizing embossed at the bottom of the hook.

Prym

Prym crochet hooks are an inline crochet hook and made from lightweight plastic.

They have a slightly pointed tip and a deep groove to help catch and guide yarn through stitches. The handle is ergonomically shaped with a slight flattening for grip, and the plastic construction provides flexibility, especially in larger hook sizes.

One thing I really like about Prym hooks are that the sizes are embossed on the bottom of the hook handle for easy identification.

Furls Streamline

Furls Streamline Metal crochet hooks are crafted from solid aluminum and are a hybrid of an inline and tapered hook. They feature an ergonomic, weighted handle with a signature hourglass shape designed to reduce hand fatigue.

From the comments I receive I’ve found that people either love these hooks or they hate them. My husband and I tested these hooks with a profilometer and found that they have the smoothest metal of any crochet hook we’ve ever tested.

Yarniss

Yarniss crochet hooks are an affordable set featuring aluminum hook tips with soft, ergonomic rubber handles. These are tapered crochet hooks and I wasn’t overly impressed by the smoothness of the metal.

They are available in a set which is a budget-friendly option for those looking for a complete crochet hook collection. They also come in a super cute little zippered pouch for storage.

Woobles Crochet Hook

Woobles crochet hooks come included in Woobles crochet kits and the one I got was a Harry Potter themed hook. It is a tapered metal hook tip and it has a soft-grip handle.

I found the hook to have a very rough finish, which caused friction and snagging when my husband was learning how to crochet. While lightweight and cute, I found this hook to be very lacking and didn’t provide the smooth glide needed for a good crochet experience.

Boye crochet hooks have been around for a long time and have a tapered aluminum hook tip with a more rounded head.

Susan Bates

The OG of crochet hooks are Susan Bates. They feature an inline aluminum hook tip with a deep groove and a flat, straight throat.

They have a simple, straight handle, though some versions include a rubber grip for added comfort. These hooks are popular among crocheters who prefer the inline hook style. And if I’m totally honest, these are my least favorite crochet hooks, but don’t throw things at the screen!

It’s just a personal preference, and I know a lot of crocheters who love these hooks.

  1. This actually surprised me! I do love my Clover Amour and Clover Soft Touch, but tend to grab my sets with cases, such as Tulip or the ergonomic person of Boye hooks. I have never cared for the Addi handle. I can’t handle the big handles like Furls or even Prym, even though I really wanted to. I guess my hands are just too stiff! Thanks for testing all of these and letting up know!
Now, back to my afghan with my trusty Clover Amour hooks! ?

  2. Hi Elise. I just found a new crochet hook set on Amazon that I would love for you to review. It’s
Mbeliever 4XL Interchangeable Crochet Hooks Crochet Hook Set 12 Different Sizes of Metal Crochet Hooks from 3mm-10mm Ergonomic
    $68.99
They look like Furls to me. I’ve been using a counting hook system but they hang on the yarn at the back. I can’t afford a set of the Furls but they look like something I’d like. Can you please please please compare these? I love your you tube channel already but would love to see this review.

    Thanks,
    Karla

  3. I Enjoyed reading this! I did wish there was one more hook from addi on here, the addi swing hooks. I’ve been super curious about those for a while and it would’ve been nice to see how they compared in this line up because they have such a unique handle. Thank you!

    1. I agree! I tried the regular Addi Swing a while ago and didn’t like how short the metal neck of the crochet hook was, but I’ve heard a lot of good things about the Addi Swing Max!
