12 Crochet Shawls You’ll Want to Make Right Now!

Now, let’s talk about something important: shawls often get a bad rap as being “just for grannies.”(And being a granny is a wonderful thing and I can’t wait to be one myself) but let me tell you, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

These stunning pieces are the ultimate blend of fashion and function. Whether you’re dressing up for a night out, cozying up on a chilly day, or just adding a pop of handmade charm to your wardrobe, shawls and wraps are for everyone!

Island Time Shawl

I decided I wanted to make a shawl for a friend who is currently going through a rough time. I wanted it to be colorful and cozy. I also wanted her to feel like she was wrapped in love and comfort.

I had a hard time choosing a pattern, but I landed on the Island Time Shawl from Nautikrall Crochet, which I just finished, and honestly, I’m still swooning over it. This shawl is everything I love about crochet—it’s light, breezy, and packed with personality. The pattern captures that perfect laid-back, tropical vibe while still feeling elegant and versatile.

The Island Time Shawl is a sunburst granny square variation which is approachable even if you’re not a super experienced crocheter, but it still offers enough interest to keep things exciting. The pattern is free on the blog, but you’ll also find a paid version to print. She also has helpful video tutorials as well.

And the best part? The color palette possibilities are endless. I chose off-white and lime green for mine, which feels cheerful and bright. But honestly, this shawl would look stunning in anything from soft pastels to bold, vibrant hues.

I mostly worked on this shawl while I was in the Dominican Republic on a 30th wedding anniversary trip with my husband. I crocheted on the airplane, in the hotel room at night and even on the gorgeous beaches of Punta Cana.

Yarn: Mirasol Winqu

For the yarn, I chose Mirasol Winqu which is a blend of organic Tanguis Peruvian cotton and silk. The name ‘Winqu,’ means ‘wave’ in an indigenous dialect of Peru, and it is the perfect name for this yarn. It’s a soft, two-ply yarn with a lightly spun texture that gives it a unique thick-and-thin wavy look.

I really fell in love with this yarn while I was working on it. It is incredibly soft and I love that the strands are purposefully not all uniform. I think it gives the shawl a little texture and interest.

But the great thing about the Island Time Shawl is that you could make it in so many different yarns! A newer version of the shawl is coming out in August with a sock weight yarn! Cannot wait to see that one!

Capricious Shawl

The great thing about crocheted shawls is that there are so many to choose from and the next one I absolutely love is the Capricious Shawl by Rachel Beth of RBSCrochet.

This one is stunning. I found this one on Ravelry and when I first saw it I thought it was knit, not crochet. I actually had to check twice, but it is definitely crocheted.

It’s an intermediate pattern and uses multiple stitch patterns and colors to create its unique look.

The designer is using a fingering weight yarn and let’s talk about why that is a great choice for shawls.

First off, it’s lightweight and fine, which means the fabric you create is thinner and has a lot of drape—perfect for things like shawls, wraps, or garments that you want to flow beautifully when you wear them.

Fingering weight yarn also gives you incredible stitch definition, so all those intricate patterns and lacy designs really stand out. You get this gorgeous, airy fabric that just moves effortlessly.

It also makes your finished pieces light and breathable, so it’s perfect for layering or wearing year-round without being too heavy.

Write a Line, Erase a Line

This next shawl is breathtaking.

Write a Line, Erase a Line by Corin Purifoy is stunning. One of the things I love most about this project is the inspiration:

“Write a Line, Erase a Line is an ode to the music of the Decemberists and to the epic story of Joan of Arc, who sat in her garden and received the visions that inspired her to change her world.”

When I read that in the Ravelry listing I immediately saw her vision and that’s one of my favorite things about crochet.

We can be practical and make things that are useful, but at the same time it can be art. It can express what is in our hearts, whether it’s an ode to your favorite band, a celebration of your favorite season, or a reflection of your personality through colors and patterns.

Crochet lets us turn our feelings, memories, and inspirations into something tangible—something that’s not just functional but deeply personal and meaningful.

Corin is using Purl Soho Good Wool in the color Hay Field and it is perfection.

Plus it’s a free download on Ravelry! Make sure to check out Corin’s beautiful Instagram account as well at I.Knit.U.Knot.

Sunset Diamonds Shawl

I’ve already given you some good options, but maybe you’re looking for something a little more dramatic and romantic. And this next shawl is perfect!

The Sunset Diamonds Shawl is stunning. Designed by Wardah for Expression Fiber Arts this project is perfect for adventurous beginners to intermediate crocheters.

This is another pattern that was inspired by a special moment. Wardah was on the beach when the sun was setting and it began to rain. Each droplet was reflecting the sunlight and it looked like the scene was full of sparkles.

You can see her inspiration captured perfectly in the shawl with the diamond shapes which are formed with shell stitches.

It is a paid pattern and you’ll also find a video tutorial to help.

Granny Wrap

Ok, maybe you want something a little simpler and you want to use a heavier weight yarn. I’ve got a great project for you!

The Granny Wrap by Annaboo’s House is the perfect shawl to make when you want to crochet something quick and simple.

She used Stylecraft Special Chunky which is a number five bulky weight yarn. I’ve been a big fan of Stylecraft Special DK and I would love to try this version of their yarn! It’s 100% acrylic and comes in lots of fun colors. It’s also very affordable at $2.99 for a 3.5 oz skein!

Super Simple Crochet Log Cabin Shawl

The next project is super simple, but what I love about it is that it doesn’t look like it.

The Super Simple Crochet Log Cabin Shawl is going on my list of projects to make! I also want to make it in these exact colors! I love how fresh and modern it looks!

This pattern was designed by Atty van Norel and I love that on one side you have warm pinks and peaches and on the other side you have cool tone blues and greens.

I could see this being the perfect shawl for early spring when the weather is still a bit chilly but you’re ready to wear those beautiful spring colors.

Ferris Wheel Granny Square Shawl

We’re sticking with the granny square theme for this next project. This is the Ferris Wheel Granny Square shawl designed by Jane from Joy of Motion Crochet.

I am in love with this granny square motif and can imagine all the different color combinations!

She used Lion Brand Basic Stitch which is a yarn I have some experience with. It’s a budget friendly worsted weight yarn. The anti-pilling version comes in 48 different colors.

Bronwyn Crochet Shawl

I couldn’t possibly put together a collection of my favorite shawls without featuring one from my girl Toni over at TL Yarn Crafts. Toni’s designs are truly next-level, and she has such an amazing ability to blend style, creativity, and accessibility into every pattern she creates.

One of my absolute favorites is the Bronwyn Shawl. This shawl is an adventure in texture and colorwork, combining stitches and hues in a way that feels both modern and timeless. It’s the kind of project that keeps you hooked—literally—with every row bringing something new and exciting.

But don’t let that intimidate you! Toni is the ultimate crochet cheerleader, and she’s got your back the whole way. Not only does she offer the free pattern on her website, but she’s also created a full video tutorial that’s like having her sitting right there with you, guiding you through each step.

What I love most about the Bronwyn Shawl is how customizable it is. You can choose bold, vibrant colors to make a statement or stick with softer, neutral tones for something more understated—it’ll look stunning either way. It’s one of those pieces you’ll treasure in your wardrobe, whether you wear it as a statement piece or gift it to someone special. Trust me, if you haven’t made one of Toni’s shawls yet, the Bronwyn Shawl is the perfect place to start!

Hygge Crochet Shawl

Copyright: Scheepjes

This might be one of the most unique crochet shawls that I have ever seen. This project was designed by the talented, Kirsten Ballering from Haak Maar Raak.

Kirsten was inspired by traditional Scandinavian designs to decorate this wrap with a combination of both crochet and cross-stitch

Ravelry

I used to do cross stitch quite a bit back in the day so seeing the combination of it with crochet makes my heart go pitter-patter.

I also really love the contrast between the dark and light versions. They are both incredibly gorgeous and feature the popular Scheepjes Stone Washed and Scheepjes Catona.
