Rating The 15 WORST Crochet Projects of ALL TIME

Sharing is caring!

Today we are doing something a little different. We are going to rank the WORST Crochet Projects Throughout all of human history. (Queue the DRAMATIC MUSIC)

I DID NOT come up with these ideas, but I stumbled upon them one day while scrolling on Reddit and found this thread from two years ago. These comments had me laughing and gasping in horror all at the same time.

Rating The 15 WORST Crochet Projects – Pin for Later!

Here is the original thread if you want to see all of the different ideas, but I’ve chosen these fifteen crochet projects because I thought were the most (let’s say) interesting.

Find the Original Reddit Thread Here

I’m going to rate these projects based on whether or not I think they deserve to be on the Worst Crochet Projects list and I would love for you to share your ratings and opinions in the comment section!

So let’s start with the first project and it’s one I remember from my childhood.

Crocheted Toilet Seat Cover

I thought this trend had died back in the 1970s, but apparently I’m wrong. After doing a quick Google search it looks like crochet toilet accessories are alive and well. These include toilet lid covers, seat covers and tank covers. Some of them are very intricate lace patterns.

You’ll also find Christmas, Easter and Halloween themed ones. You can even personalize your toilet with crocheted flowers or even a cute little owl.

Many of these projects look very well made, but if I’m going to be honest, I personally don’t want the things I crochet to be anywhere near a toilet.

For that reason I do think these should be on the Worst Crochet Projects List.

Crocheted Underwear

I’m not going to be sharing any photos of these, but our next project to rate is crocheted underwear.

I can’t imagine that these would be comfortable, breathable or supportive.

But what’s interesting is that I have a knitting book that was published in 1940 and it includes a lingerie section. One of my favorites is titled Vest and Pantees for the Older Woman.

This doesn’t look particularly comfortable but I guess it would have kept you warm because it was made with 100% wool. Thank goodness for stretchy, synthetic fibers.

I’m putting these projects in the Worst Crochet Projects List.

Cat Butt Coasters

Another one of the projects listed in the original Reddit thread are Cat Butt Coasters.

If you haven’t seen these floating around Pinterest, let me set the scene.

These are coasters that show the backside of a cat, with its tail sticking straight up in the air.

You may already know that I adore my two kitty cats and love crocheted kitties in all forms. But I must say that I don’t necessarily need to see that particular part of a cat in crocheted form.

But I will admit they are pretty cute and I love that the people who made them obviously have an amazing sense of humor.

Although I don’t think I would ever crochet these myself, I don’t think they deserve to be on the Worst Crocheted Projects list.

Crocheted Barefoot Sandals

The next project is crocheted barefoot sandals.

The best way to describe these is a sole-less sandal, not soulless (GIF), but shoe sole-less, meaning it has no sole or bottom of the shoe

While I don’t think I would crochet any of these for me or my family, I can see making them especially for teenagers. They are purely decorative but some of them are really pretty!

I do NOT think these should be on the Worst Crocheted Projects List.

Toilet Paper Cover Dolls

Another crochet project from my childhood is Toilet paper cover dolls. I distinctly remember these from when I was a kid and to be honest… I loved them back then!

There were different varieties, but the ones I thought looked so pretty looked more like a Barbie with a big ball gown.

But I did come across a set that have faces poking out from the side are kind of terrifying. Imagine coming across THAT in the middle of the night.

I’m going to be super honest here, I kind of love “vintagey”, weird dolls. I’ve liked that kind of thing since I was little. I love Tim Burton movies, I just like things that are cute, but kind of creepy.

For that reason I am do NOT think these should be on the Worst Crocheted Projects List.

I say we bring the toilet paper crocheted doll back and horrify all of our family members.

Amigurumi With Realistic Butt Cheeks

The next project is a more current trend that I’ve seen a time or two. These are amigurumi toys with realistic derrières also known as butt cheeks.

But honestly I think these can be pretty darn cute. One of my favorites is an amigurumi apple designed by Tiny Curl. That little booty is soooo cute!!

Another one I found that was super adorable is the Cheeky Shroom pattern from Miguel Crochets. Oh my goodness!!! So adorable!

I think these are delightful so for that reason I am NOT putting these on the Worst Crochet Projects List.

Steering Wheel Cover

Our next project involves crocheting something for the car and it’s a steering wheel cover.

At first when I was looking through different photos of them I thought…. I want to make one!!

But then I started to think about the practicalities of having a crocheted steering wheel cover.

And the more I thought about it, the more concerned I would be having one on my steering wheel.

The image that keeps popping into my head is trying to turn my steering wheel and the crocheted cover slipping around. That would NOT be good.

I think this could pose a pretty serious safety risk and for those reasons I’m putting this on my Worst Crochet Projects list.

Realistic Crocheted Food

The next project is crocheted food. We aren’t talking about cute little crocheted cups of tea or pancakes with faces, but realistic looking crocheted food.

But the more I look at the images of them, the more I want to make them! WOW!!!! These are amazing!!

First these would be so much fun for a child with a play kitchen!

But even without that, these look really fun to make. I know they really have no true purpose, but I can’t get over how amazingly realistic they look.

I’m always in awe of people who have the imagination to come up with ideas like this. I’m a pretty hum drum person and the things that pop into my head aren’t all that unique. I would love to live in the mind of a person who thinks up these kinds of projects!

I am NOT putting crocheted realistic foods on the list of Worst Crochet Projects!

Life Size Crochet Dolls

This next project was one that I thought was going to be really strange when I learned about it in the Reddit comments, but it turned out to be absolutely incredible.

Liisa Hietanen from Finland has crocheted life sized dolls of her family and friends. I’m not even sure if doll is the correct term. These are realistic replicas of people and their pets from her community.

To be honest, I am truly in awe of these creations and can’t imagine how much time and effort went into them.

I love these photos of the real person standing next to their crocheted version. They are amazing!!

I’ll leave a link for the full article below if you want to read more about them. But she creates metal sculptural structures underneath and then crochets over them.

I’m truly in awe of the artist who made these life size crocheted people and animals. I’ve never seen anything quite like this before with crochet.

I do NOT think these deserve to be on the Worst Crochet Projects list.

Crocheted Umbrella

This next project is one that I thought was pretty awful at first, but the more I’ve thought about it, the more I like it.

This project is a crocheted umbrella and while it would be terrible for rain (obviously), it would be nice for shade.

Some of these projects are so intricate and colorful.

One of my favorites is the Cherry Blossom Crochet Parasol Pattern from Chiaro’s Curiosity.

Find the Cherry Blossom Parasol Pattern Here

Of course this would be a terrible project if you were trying to keep yourself from getting rained on. But if you just want shade and you want it to be extraordinarily beautiful, this is it.

I DO NOT think these should be on the Worst Crocheted Project list.

Amigurumi With Baby Animals Inside

Well this next project is uhhhhh….. interesting.

Have you seen amigurumi animals with babies inside them?

There are openings, usually in the back to be able to remove the babies (or should I say give birth?).

And while I do understand why some people might feel uncomfortable with them, I think they are an amazing teaching opportunity for children.

One Etsy shop I found has lots of different patterns with animals and even a human. Lau Loves Crochet has so many amazing crochet patterns and one of my favorites is the crocheted pig with piglets.

Find Lau Loves Crochet Patterns Here

Now I do get how some people would feel a little weird about these patterns, but when you think about what it’s intended for, it makes total sense.

I think the human pattern would be so perfect for a child who is going to be a big brother or sister and they can play with the doll and better understand where the baby is and how it’s going to come out.

I think it’s a pretty amazing concept and would be so helpful for kids so it is NOT going on my Worst Crocheted Projects list.

Crocheted Nose Warmer

This next project is one that I have never heard of in my entire life and that’s a crocheted nose warmer.

Now, I live in North Carolina and the only other US states I’ve lived in are Florida, Texas and Tennessee. You wouldn’t need a nose warmer in any of those places.

It does get a tad bit chilly here in the winter and when my face gets cold I usually just pull up my scarf or cowl to cover my nose and mouth to keep warm. (Put in the photo of me with cowl)

I’m probably not the one to rate this crochet project because I don’t live somewhere where it gets cold enough to need something like this.

So for all of you Canadians, Midwesterners and people from up North, what do you think? Is this something people actually need and use?

I’m going to leave this rating for you to decide!

Crochet Toaster Cover

Another project that was mentioned in the Reddit thread was a crocheted blender/toaster cover.

At first glance I thought these were so adorable. I love the one that looks like a cute little camper.

Find the Crochet Caravan Toaster Cozy Pattern Here

I also found a kitchen set that includes a toaster cover that is absolutely adorable. It’s the Granny Go Round Kitchen Set from Maggie Weldon.

But then I started to think about the safety concerns. I am such a forgetful person that I would likely burn my whole house down if I had a flammable toaster cover.

Although I love all the other crocheted kitchen accessories, this is one that I will skip.

For those reasons I’m putting this on my Worst Crocheted Projects list.

Crocheted Water Balloons

This next project had me scratching my head for a little while because I could not wrap my brain around how these worked.

These are the crocheted water balloons and to be honest, I think these are amazing and I’m kind of surprised that they were in the Reddit thread.

Instead of filling these “balloons” up with water, you just soak them and they act as a sponge. Many people I saw making them used Bernat Blanket yarn and they all said that it worked like a charm.

Instead of filling up water balloons only to have them break as soon as you throw them, these are reusable and will last for years!

For that reason these will NOT be going on my list of Worst Crocheted Projects.

Crocheted Fingerless Gloves

Another project that was in the Reddit thread mentioned Crocheted Fingerless Gloves as absolutely useless.

I couldn’t disagree with this more.

I haven’t crocheted fingerless gloves but I have knit a pair and to be honest I use them all winter long (it’s one of the few projects that I have made that I can bring myself to actually use).

These are the Pinwheel mitts and I bought this kit from Loop London when we were there in 2021. It’s one of my favorite yarn shops and they have such a beautiful instagram account if you want to feel truly inspired!

They fit “like a glove” and because it’s not particularly cold here in North Carolina I can keep my hands warm but still use my fingers especially for my phone or driving or when I’m taking my cats for a walk.

I find them very useful in the climate I live in.

For that reason this project is NOT going on my list of Worst Crocheted Projects.
