Simple Crochet Star Tutorial

In this simple crochet star tutorial, I show you exactly how to make these pint sized heavenly bodies. The project is suitable enough for an experienced beginner but completely addictive for the veteran crocheter.

Both of my sons love astronomy, always have. Over the years they have shared everything they learned about stars. It makes my head hurt. How can we be seeing light that is millions of years old? I’m not smart enough to understand the universe and all that happens in the heavens. But I am qualified to crochet a cute little star and today I’m showing you how too!

Simple Crochet Star

These simple crochet stars are everything a project should be in my mind, simple, adorable and totally addictive. I love projects that I want to make over and over again.

Although I don’t decorate for every season, I enjoy adding crocheted and knitted touches to my holiday decor. I’ve got bunnies and carrots for Easter and now I’m looking toward summer.

There’s something incredibly nostalgic about summer to me. Parades, grilled hamburgers, and fireworks bring back great memories from my childhood. Hot, humid nights watching exploding lights in the sky is one of my favorite things to do.

Materials

• Crochet Hook (size to match yarn – I used a 4 mm)
• Worsted Weight Yarn (or any yarn you have on hand – I used Paintbox Wool Mix Aran in colors: Vanilla Cream, Pillar Red & Royal Blue)
• Scissors
• Yarn Needles

Pattern Notes

• This pattern is suitable for an intermediate beginner.
• US crochet terms
• Gauge is not important for this project

Finished Size

Your finished measurements will depend on several different factors like the size hook, the weight of your yarn and your own personal tension. My finished stars are approximately 3 inches by 3 inches.

4dc Bobble Stitch

4dc Bobble Stitch – yo and insert hook into ch 1 space from round 1, draw up loop, pull the yarn through 2 loops only, repeat 3 more times, only drawing through 2 loops each time until you have 5 loops on your hook. Pull yarn through all 5 loops. (If you have any confusion, please watch the video for how to make it).

SPsc = Spike Stitch

The SPsc (spike stitch) is a simple, decorative stitch that is simple to make. It is just a single crochet, but instead of working into the stitch from the previous round you are working into a chain space from the first round. (If you have any confusion, please watch the video for how to make it).

Abbreviations

• mr = magic ring
• yo = yarn over
• ch = chain
• sl st = slip stitch
• sc = single crochet
• dc = double crochet
• tr = treble crochet
• hdc = half double crochet
• 4dc popcorn = popcorn stitch
• SPsc = spike stitch

Pattern

• Make a mr
• Round 1 – ch 4 (counts as a dc + 1 ch), [dc, ch1] into the mr 9 times (total of 10 dc + 1 ch in between), sl st to the top of the ch 3 to close round
• Round 2 – sl st to ch 1 space from previous round, ch 3, [make a 4dc bobble st into ch 1 space from previous round, ch 2] 10 times (total of 10 4dc bobble stitches + ch 2 in between) – Please see note above about how to make the 4dc bobble st if you need more information.
• Round 3 – sl st to the ch 2 space from previous round, ch 3, dc, tr, 2 dc, hdc, all in the ch 2 space, ch 1. SPsc into the ch 1 space directly below from Round 1, ch 1, SPsc into the next ch 1 space directly below from Round 1, ch 1 [hdc, 2 dc, tr, 2dc, hdc, ch 1, into the ch 2 space from Round 2, SPsc into the ch 1 space directly below from Round 1, ch 1, SPsc into the ch 1 space directly below from Round 1, ch 1] 4 times (total of 5 points), in the same ch 2 space we began our work for this round, hdc, sl st to the top of ch 3 to close round, fasten off and weave in end. There are so many different things you could do with these adorable simple crochet stars. And trust me, you are going to want to find excuses to keep crocheting them.

Crochet Star Bunting

This is the project I decided to make with my simple crochet stars. I wanted something fun and festive for the upcoming summer holidays. I chose to use red, white and blue for Fourth of July.

Next, I used strips of fabric I had on hand to attach each star to a piece of jute. I think it turned out quite cute and will be using this for my summer holiday decor for years to come.
