2024 Walmart Crochet Haul – the Good, the Bad & the Ugly

Sharing is caring!

During my 2024 Walmart Crochet Haul, I discovered a mix of both gems and disappointments in their craft section. On the positive side, the yarn selection was impressive, with vibrant colors and various textures that cater to all kinds of projects.

The affordability and accessibility of these materials are definite pluses.

However, some of the crochet hooks and accessories fell short in quality, lacking the durability and ergonomic design that more experienced crocheters might seek. Despite these minor setbacks, the overall haul was fruitful, offering a broad spectrum of supplies to fuel my crochet creativity.

2024 Walmart Crochet Haul

I’m a frequent Walmart shopper. I buy groceries, things for my home and even toys for my cats. (And I have very picky cats and their toys are on point).

Recently (and when I say recently I mean today) I got the urge to go check out the craft section at my local Walmart to see what kind of crochet supplies they have in stock. I have never really paid attention to whether or not they have yarn, crochet hooks and supplies.

I came home with 9 different yarns, two different crochet hook sets, a magnifying gadget, and a notions organizer.

We are going to test them all and then at the end of the video I’m going to share which crochet items I got at Walmart are worth it and which ones I think you can skip.

Mainstays 100% Acrylic Yarn

The first yarn we are going to try is from the Walmart brand Mainstays. This is a 100% acrylic yarn. It’s 285 yards and 5 oz. I got the Pink Blend color way. It’s a multi color yarn with different shades of pink, fuchsia and white. I paid $2.98 for it.

On the Walmart website it has an average of 4.7 stars and over 300 reviews. That’s pretty good!

The recommended hook size is 5.5 mm so let’s try it out!

PROS:

  • It has decent stitch definition.
  • It’s not super thick which can happen with some budget friendly acrylic yarns.
  • Very affordable.

CONS:

  • Very few color options.
  • Not as nice as other budget friendly yarns.
  • Colors aren’t great.
  • Doesn’t feel very nice in your hands.

Peaches & Creme Original Yarn

The next yarn is Peaches & Creme Original. It’s a 100% cotton, #4 worsted weight yarn. This is the color mint. It’s 2.5 oz and 120 yards.

One thing I noticed on the label is that it notes: “Wash colors separately. SOME COLORS MAY RUN. That was all in bold. Uhhhh, that’s not good.

I paid $1.97 and on the website the yarn has an average of 4.5 stars and over 150 reviews.

The recommended hook size is 5 mm, so let’s try it out!

PROS:

  • The color Mint is very pretty.

CONS:

  • One of the worst yarns I’ve ever used before.
  • Feels more like rope than yarn.
  • Stiff and scratchy.
  • Did I mention that it’s awful?

Mainstays 100% Cotton Yarn

Next is another Mainstays brand and it’s their 100% cotton yarn. The color is Opaline Green and it’s 3.5 oz and 180 yards.

It’s a number 4, worsted weight yarn and I paid $3.48 for it. On the Walmart website it got an average of 4.5 stars and over 240 reviews.

Without even using the yarn yet, it already feels much much softer than the Peaches & Creme yarn. The recommended hook size is 5 mm, so let’s test it out!

PROS:

  • Surprisingly nice 100% cotton yarn.
  • Softer than many budget friendly cotton yarns.
  • The color is very pretty.
  • Good price.

CONS:

  • Doesn’t come in many colors (on the website there are only 7).

The next yarn is Red Heart Scrubby. This is a yarn that was developed specifically for dishcloths.

It’s a number 4 worsted weight yarn and this is the color Ocean.

It has an average of 4.7 stars and over 330 reviews.

The recommended crochet hook size is 5.5 mm so let’s check it out.

PROS:

  • The color Ocean is very pretty and reminds me of Cookie Monster fur.

CONS:

  • Worst yarn ever.
  • Zero stitch definition.
  • Feels like working with spiky plastic.
  • Expensive!

Premier Bloom Chunky Big Yarn

I was so excited to see Premier Yarns at Walmart. They are one of my favorite yarn brands and this gorgeous skein caught my eye immediately.

This is the Premier Bloom Chunky Big Self Striping Floral Print.

It’s a #5 Bulky weight yarn. It’s 7 oz and 218 yards. It’s a big skein of yarn.

I paid $5.97 and this is the color Snapdragon. It has an average of 4.7 stars and over 220 reviews.

I ended up going onto the Premier website to learn more about this yarn because when crocheted with the correct stitch and gauge it will automatically create little flowers.

But for the purposes of this video we are just going to test and see how the yarn feels and works up.  It’s so pretty!

The recommended crochet hook size is 8 mm so let’s test it out!

PROS:

  • Beautiful color.
  • Very soft.
  • Nice stitch definition
  • Good price for large skein.

CONS:

  • Not really a con, but it could take some time to learn how to use the floral effect by getting the correct gauge. Check out the Premier Yarns website here, for more information.

The next yarn is another one I’m excited to try! I have never tried Lion Brand Mandala, but I’m so excited to test it out.

This is a very popular yarn and I see so many beautiful patterns featuring it.

This is the color Groot and it’s a self striping yarn. I LOVE this color way.

Lion Brand Mandala has an average of 4.5 stars and over 160 reviews.

It’s 5.3 oz and 590 yards. It’s a number 3 light weight yarn and I paid $5.37 for it. It’s 100% acrylic and the recommended crochet hook size is a 5 mm. Let’s test it out!

Premier Puzzle Yarn

The final yarn is Premier Puzzle. I ended up taking both skeins of this yarn because I absolutely love these colors. This is the color Crossword and I absolutely have to make the blanket on the front of the label. This is the Marlow Throw and it is knitted, but you’ll find lots of crochet patterns for this yarn on the Premier website.

This is a #5 Bulky weight yarn and it’s 7 oz and 328 yards. I paid $5.98 for this skein and when I checked on the Premier website it was $7.99. That was interesting to see that you can get some really good deals on brand name yarn at Walmart!

Premier Puzzle has an average of 4.8 stars and over 790 reviews on the Walmart website. Wow!

The recommended crochet hook size is 6 mm so let’s test it out!

PROS:

  • Gorgeous colorway.
  • Good price at Walmart.
  • Feels very nice when working with it.

CONS:

  • No cons.

Walmart Crochet Gadgets

I’m saving a certain brand of yarn for later, but now let’s check out this really interesting gadget I found amongst the crochet notions.

Carson 2x Hands Free Magnifier

This is the Carson 2x Hands free magnifier. The moment I saw this on the shelves I knew it was coming home with me.

Sometimes I have a hard time seeing my work, especially if I’m doing something detailed like embroidering facial features for crocheted amigurumi toys or sewing on amigurumi body parts.

I can see that having a magnifier could be a real benefit. I also like that this is hands free and that it’s pretty small. I’ve seen some that are on stands and I like that this one just goes around your neck.

I paid $13.97 for it and let’s test this out and see how it works!

PROS:

  • Very easy to use.
  • Adjustable strap.
  • Nice to be able to see small detail work so close up.

CONS:

  • Strap was a little too long so I had to make a small knot in it to get it to the right length.
  • The strap is a little scratchy, but isn’t too bad.

Creative Options Small Rack System

This next item is one I’m really excited about. I struggle a lot with keeping my notions organized.

Typically I just dump everything in a project bag and I have to dig around and hunt for exactly what I need.

When I saw this on the shelf at Walmart I immediately thought of all the things I could use it for.

I paid $19.97 for the organizer. It’s 11 inches in length, 7.25 inches in width and 10 inches in height. So it’s a really nice size.

It also has a handle so that you can easily carry it around.

There are two sections of the rack system.

The top unclips and it’s open section for larger items. It’s large enough to fit a couple of average size skeins of yarn, but it isn’t big enough for big balls of yarn. But you could put crochet hooks or scissors in it.

Then you open up the front of the rack and it contains four smaller trays. These all have sturdy clasps that lock the top into place.

Inside each of the smaller trays you’ll find it divided into sections. You’ll also find these little divider clips if you want to separate the sections even further.

PROS:

  • Not too large, but large enough to hold notions like crochet hooks, stitch markers, safety eyes, buttons, embroidery floss, etc.
  • Top section is large enough to hold a small to medium skein of yarn.
  • Front section contains four individual trays with dividers.
  • Additional dividers to customize organization.

CONS:

  • The only con is that with the smaller racks the clasps can be a little tough to open and close. I had to use some strength to get one of them closed.

Pioneer Woman Crochet Collection at Walmart

These next items are things that I have been so excited to get my hands on!

Ever since I heard that they existed I have been chomping at the bit to try them!

I got four skeins and two different crochet hook sets from the Pioneer Woman brand at Walmart!

I have been a big fan of Ree Drummond for years! I’ve watched her show, made her recipes, have her gorgeous mugs in my kitchen. And now I’m so excited to try her yarn and crochet hooks! (And I know earlier this year I said I wasn’t going to buy any more crochet hooks. And here I am, again, testing more new crochet hooks.)

One thing that I found really strange is that the Pioneer Woman collection was hard to find. These were some of my top items that I wanted to try

Pioneer Woman 100% Acrylic Yarn

The Pioneer Woman yarn is 100% acrylic #3 Light Weight yarn. I got the solid colors blue and coral. Then I also got the variegated yarns in the colors Coral Stripes and Brilliant Blooms.

If you’ve ever been to the Pioneer Woman website or seen any of her collections at Walmart you will recognize her signature colors. They are inspired by vibrant florals are so pretty.

They have an average of 4.4 stars and over 100 reviews. And I paid $3 per skein.

Each skein is 3.5 oz and 394 yards. The recommended crochet hook size is 5 mm. So let’s test it out!

PROS:

  • The colors are the Pioneer Woman signature colors, bright, bold and floral.
  • The price is very good for a 3.5 oz skein.

CONS:

  • Very thin, cheap feeling yarn. Very disappointing.
  • Terrible stitch definition. The yarn started to fuzz as I was working on it.
  • Color change on variegated yarn was messy and didn’t look nice.

Pioneer Woman Crochet Hook Set with Case

Finally we are going to test the Pioneer Woman crochet hooks!

I’ve gotten several requests to check them out and I am so excited to get my hands on them.

There are two different crochet hooks sets.

The first one has 16 steel crochet hooks, 8 aluminum hooks and a carrying case.

I paid $10 for the set and on the Walmart website they got an average of 4.8 stars and over 120 reviews.

Let’s test this one out first.

PROS:

  • The price. $10 for that many hooks is a good price.
  • The steel hooks were smooth.
  • The case is very nice.

CONS:

  • The aluminum hooks are awful. There is so much drag.
  • The hook sizes are very strange and not standard sizes.
  • The steel crochet hooks have very short handles.

Pioneer Woman Crochet Hook Set Floral Hooks

The second set of hooks is the Pioneer Woman Sweet Rose Crochet Hook Set. This comes with 8 aluminum crochet hooks in sizes 2.5 mm to 6 mm.

I paid $10 for this set and I am kind of shocked to see that they only got an average of 2.2 stars and 40 reviews. I’m going to put that aside and see what I think based on my own test.

PROS:

  • The hooks are very pretty.
  • They are fairly smooth metal.

CONS:

  • There are no hook sizes on the hooks anywhere. Using these hooks would be incredibly frustrating for me because it would require checking frequently to make sure I was using the correct hook size.

2024 Walmart Crochet Haul

In conclusion, my 2024 Walmart Crochet Haul revealed a diverse range of products that cater to the varying needs of crocheters. While the store offers an impressive array of yarns and some fantastic deals, the quality of certain tools and accessories may not meet the expectations of seasoned crafters.

However, with a bit of discernment, Walmart remains a convenient and budget-friendly option for stocking up on crochet essentials. This haul has shown that, despite a few drawbacks, Walmart can be a valuable resource for both new and experienced crocheters looking to explore their creativity without breaking the bank.
