Easy Amigurumi Tutu Tutorial

Sharing is caring!

Adding adorable details to amigurumi is one of my favorite things to do. In this amigurumi tutu tutorial I will share how easy it is to add a little fun and flair to your crocheted toys.

When Aggie the Alligator shared her deepest desire to become a ballerina and wear a tutu, I knew there was just one thing to do. First, I chose the right color tulle and then immediately got to work. No one wants to disappoint a sweet little alligator.

Adding a tutu to any amigurumi project is simple and easy, but adds so much character and charm. You only need a handful of supplies and a little time.

Amigurumi Tutu Tutorial Steps

The above video is the complete tutorial, but if you would like the written instructions, they are below. Also check out my previous tutu tutorial post for photos, if that suits you better than video.

  1. Begin your amigurumi project by crocheting one round in the BLO (back loop only). This is where we will add our tulle strips.
  2. I cut the tulle in strips of 1.5″ wide and 9″ long. This worked well for the length I wanted the skirt. To make a skirt the length you want, measure and then double the number since you will be folding the strip over when attaching it. My pig’s skirt is 4.5″ long from where it is attached to the bottom.
  3. Next fold over the tulle strip, insert your hook underneath the loop and pull the tulle from the center fold.
  4. Pull the tulle strip through the loop.
  5. I added two strips for each BLO stitch for a full skirted look.
  6. Continue to pull the tulle strips through the loops. At this point I adjusted the ends so they were even lengths.
  7. Now you have a large tulle loop on one side of the stitch and two tulle ends on the other side. Pull both ends through the tulle loop.
  8. Pull the loop taut to secure.
  9. Finally I trimmed the ends so they were mostly even but perfection wasn’t the goal.

Alternative Ideas

Check out my favorite amigurumi book recommendations.

You could change up the tutu by adding different colors. Alternate two different colors in each BLO, create a rainbow effect, or make color blocks with vibrant colors

Use specific colors to reflect holiday seasons. Maybe try red and green for Christmas, icy blues for winter, bright yellows for spring or orange for fall.

Experiment with the length of the tulle to give the skirt a different look. A long skirt will flow and give a dreamy, soft look. Shorten the skirt for a spunky, cute attitude.

Make a matching toy with a tulle skirt to give to a little girl after a dance performance. What a special gift that will make. I know my daughter would have adored that when she was a dancer.

  1. Aggie is so cute! I’m always intimidated when I see your finished product but I am always relieved when you show the process. You are a great teacher and I love watching you. I hope you write a children’s book someday using your characters.

  2. I had my little one look at the screen over my shoulder and instantly become excited. She’s obsessed with alligators and ballet! Looks like making this is in my future! She wants the clothes in black like her ballet uniform though. Not quite as fun or exciting, but she may be flexible on the tutu color since they aren’t allowed to wear them for class. I bought the book already with the intention of making the alligator for her. Now it’ll be even better. Thanks Elise!

    1. Oh how fun!!! I wish I had been a crocheter when my daughter danced! She would have loved this too!! I’m so glad you like it! And I think it will be cute even in the black although that will be a bugger to work with! Lol!

  3. I love how you crocheted the tulle directly on! How ingenious. I made the otter from the book and gave her a tulle skirt but attached it separately. I like your method much better!

  4. This is such a cute tutorial! I thought Aggie was super cute but then scrolling down (the pig!). All of them are great.
