Largest Display of Crochet Sculptures
The first world record that we are going to chat about is the Largest Display of Crochet Sculptures. This record was set on January 21, 2018 in Chennai, India.
A crochet group based in India set this new record with an incredible display of crochet sculptures. The group known as Mother India’s Crochet Queens achieved this accomplishment by creating an astounding 58,917 crochet pieces under the theme “Go Green, Save the Earth.” The collection portrays a range of imaginative scenes showcasing the journey of humanity and planet earth over time.
The group is mostly composed of women from India, they also have members all over the world who sent in pieces to be part of the project.
I’m so impressed with this world record and imagine it must have taken a lot of coordinating and organization to pull this off!

Longest Crocheted Scarf

The next Guinness World Record is for the longest crocheted scarf. This particular record was set by an individual and achieved on April 1, 2024.
Daisy Ptak started crocheting this scarf in February of 2023. It took over 250 skeins of yarn to make and in total was 982 feet long! It broke the previous record of 840 feet by 142 feet!
A local architect volunteered to be the official measurer to certify the winning record.
I admire Daisy’s patience for making a project like this. I don’t think I would have the attention span to complete something so big! This makes crocheting a simple blanket seem like a piece of cake. I also wonder where in the world she stored this as she was working on it!!!

The Longest Crochet Chain
You aren’t going to believe this next one.
Instead of me just telling you how long this chain is, let’s play a little game.
How long do you think this crochet chain is?
- A – 3 miles
- B – 80 miles
- C – 15 miles
- D – 214 miles
If you answered D, 214 miles you would be correct. MIND BLOWN.
This chain was crocheted by elementary school students, parents and teachers. It took them nine months to complete the project and was recorded on July 19, 2021.
The Longest Crochet Chain by an Individual
The 214 mile chain was created by a group, but there’s also a world record for the longest chain crocheted by an individual.
It was by a Frenchwoman and measured precisely 80.78 miles in total and took five months to complete! This record was set on October 14, 2009.
Longest Crochet Marathon
The next crochet world record is one that if it wasn’t recorded, I wouldn’t believe it.
The longest crochet marathon is an astonishing 72 hours. As much as I love to crochet I don’t think I could ever crochet for 72 hours straight.
This record was achieved by a Nigerian woman from December 24 – 27, 2023. The previous record was thirty-four hours and seven minutes.
When asked why she decided to attempt this record she said that it stemmed from her passion for crochet and that she wanted to push her personal limits. She also said:
I aim to showcase the artistry and perseverance involved in this craft and promote awareness about crocheting and its benefits.
Chidinma Modupe Okafor
Wow.
During her crochet marathon she created a white dinner gown and was only allowed to rest for two hours of rest, five minutes for each hour of crochet. During these breaks she could eat, sleep, go to the bathroom or change her clothes.
When she ran out of yarn, she had to immediately move onto the next one.
This is amazing on so many levels. I love that she combined her love of the craft while at the same time challenging herself. Her desire to bring attention to how wonderful crochet is makes me a little verklempt.

The Largest Crochet Hook
The next crochet world record is absolutely incredible.
Clare and Broa Sams from the UK created the largest crochet hook on record and was set on December 11, 2017
It measures a whopping 9 feet 1 inch!
The participants shared that they made the hook because of their love of crocheting. And they presented it as part of a teaching event on World Wide Knit in Public Day, which will be held again on June 14th.
The Largest Crochet Canopy
Oh my goodness, this next crochet world record is incredible. It’s so fantastic that I double checked to make sure this wasn’t fake!
The largest crochet canopy world record was earned on October 4th, 2019.
It took over 200 people, 8 months and 25,000 hours to crochet 8.248 hexagons and used over 1800 pounds of synthetic raffia to create.
In total the crochet canopy measured over 30,000 square feet!
It all began with a mother and daughter who wanted to decorate their town for a local festival. They and other crocheters in their community experimented with different techniques until they came to the realization that crocheted hexagons were the answer.
What’s so incredible is that the official winner of the record is ninety-two-year-old Paloma.
Her daughter explained that her mother had recently lost her husband and having this amazing project gave her mother something positive and creative to focus on.

Largest Crochet Blanket
The next crochet world record was an incredible group effort! You will not believe how big the largest crochet blanket is!
It measures in total over 185,000 square feet, that’s roughly the size of four football fields!
This massive crochet blanket project was organized by the group 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day in South Africa.
Thousands of people including school children, the elderly, the Society for the Blind and prisoners in 84 correctional facilities across South Africa helped make this project a success!
The blanket was measured on April 22, 2016 in Cape Town.
Largest Crochet Square
This next crochet world record has a really interesting back story.
The Guinness World Record for Largest Crochet Square was awarded on May 14, 2016 to Santa Barbara resident Stephen Duneier.
I did a little digging and found a really intersting article by Michele Dobbins of I Like Crochet.
Stephen originally got interested in crochet after seeing some local yarn bombs in his area.
He began making crocheted squares to contribute to a local yarn bomb installation.
Duneier began to wonder what would happen if he eliminated the time-consuming part of starting each individual square and simply kept going on the same one—and that’s exactly what he did.
Stephen Duneier
He made over a half a million double crochets and the square is a total of over 1,300 square feet. That’s the size of a house!
Longest Chain of Crochet Bunting
The next crochet world record holder goes to two women and an organization from the Netherlands.
The longest chain of crochet bunting is over seven miles long!
This record was achieved on July 8th, 2018. The organization the bunting was made for is a support center for people with cancer.
Most People Crocheting at the Same Time (record)
The world record for most people crocheting at the same time is 960 people and was recorded on February 24, 2023.
This broke the previously held record of 604 people crocheting simultaneously in 2017.
The new world record was awarded at the Derby Arena in Derby, UK where hundreds of people came together to crochet at the same time. The effort was for “Make a Difference: Make a Blanket” organized to distribute blankets to those in need over the winter.
Fastest Crocheter
I’ve seen some fast crocheters in my time, but this one beats them all.
Lisa Gentry from Monroe, Louisiana is the world record holder for the fastest crocheter of all time.
She crocheted a total of 5,118 stitches in 30 minutes. The official record was set in a Michaels craft store on June 25, 2005.
Lisa crocheted 284 shell stitches, plus one treble crochet stitch which totaled 5,118 stitches. She averaged 170 stitches per minute.
My mind is completely blown!!!
Can I Break This World Record?
But now I want to know can I beat the fastest crocheter in the world? To find out I found a fifteen year old Speed Test video on YouTube featuring Lisa Gentry and I’m feeling pretty good about my chances. (Famous last words, lol).
Lisa recommends getting a 5.5 mm crochet hook and worsted weight yarn:
- chain 28
- starting in the fourth chain from the hook, make a treble crochet in each ch (25) chain 3, turn
- make 3 treble crochets between each st (shell st)
- crochet for one minute and stop
- count your shell stitches
Lisa ended up crocheting 24 shell stitches in one minute. Let’s see if I can beat her record.
Longest Crochet Chain While Running a Marathon
I don’t even know what to say about this next world record.
Most of us watching this video are crocheters. Then there are probably some of you who are runners. But how many of you crochet while you run???
Well that’s exactly what Susie Hewer did at the 2014 Virginia Money London Marathon.
Susie crocheted the longest chain while running a marathon and it measured 457.35 feet!
I have so many questions.
- How did she come up with idea?
- How long did it take her to be able to run while crocheting?
- How many times has she fallen while crocheting and running?
- What does she do with the chain as it gets longer and longer so that she doesn’t trip?
- Where does she put the yarn as she making the chain?
Susie finished the marathon in 5 hours and 40 minutes WHILE SHE WAS CROCHETING!
What’s even more amazing is that she did this all to help support Alzheimer’s research after her mother lost her battle with vascular dementia.
Can I Beat This World Record?
I’m feeling so incredibly inspired by Susie Hewer and I’m going to attempt to beat her record right here, right now.
But I’m also going to make a pretty bold prediction… I seriously doubt I’m going to be able to beat this world record, but by golly, I’m going to try.
First of all, I’m not a runner, but I do know how to run. That’s a good thing.
I am a tad bit concerned because I’m not known to be the most coordinated person on the planet and I’m a little worried that I’m going to hurt myself. But I’m just dumb enough to try.
