My introduction to Anne of Green Gables began while I was recovering from an unfortunate mishap. I was fourteen years old and had a face full of stitches, a broken cheek bone and teeth that weren’t in their original spot.

The details of that gruesome scene aren’t all that interesting. I had been in an accident and I needed rest to recover.

Anne of Green Gables Amigurumi Doll

It was 1986 and my mother turned on our massive TV, to one of only four stations we could get in our tiny north Florida town. Do you remember how heavy those television sets were?

She adjusted the bunny ears so the picture on the screen would come into sharp focus. That was the day I first laid eyes on a spirited red head named “Anne with an ‘e'” I knew immediately that I had found a kindred spirit.

Anne’s adventures on Prince Edward Island have always captivated me. But it wasn’t until recently that I found a beautiful Anne of Green Gables amigurumi doll pattern that I loved.

I began my hunt for the perfect Anne of Green Gables doll soon after I received the most thoughtful gift from an Instagram friend. Pia, from Mrs. Ginger Handmade, sent me a project bag made from Anne of Green Gables fabric.

You can get your own beautiful project bag by contacting Pia directly on her Instagram page.

I was so moved by Pia’s kind gesture that I knew I had to crochet an Anne doll to go with it.

As I searched, I kept coming back to the adorable pattern by Amour Fou Crochet. The doll’s adorable simplicity captivated my heart and I got to work right away.

I used my beloved Berroco Vintage yarn and my 3.5 mm crochet hook to crochet my adorable little Anne.

Perfect Pattern

There are so many reasons why this is the perfect Anne of Green Gables Doll Pattern, and I thought it would be fun to hear directly from Anne and the other wonderful characters from the acclaimed work of fiction.

No Mistakes

Isn’t it nice to think that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet?

Anne of Green Gables

I think this is one of the best things about starting an amigurumi pattern. There aren’t any mistakes yet.

Thankfully this pattern is quite straightforward. I didn’t find any unusual stitches or techniques. Honestly, it would make a wonderful first amigurumi doll pattern.

Imagination

It’s delightful when your imaginations come true, isn’t it?

Anne of Green Gables

All while crocheting this beautiful doll, I kept thinking back to when I was first introduced to Anne of Green Gables.

I remember being captivated by Anne’s ability to express herself so perfectly. She wore her heart on her sleeve and as a young teenaged girl I could identify with her struggles.

The Joy of Strife

I’ve done my best, and I begin to understand what is meant by ‘the joy of strife’. Next to trying and winning, the best thing is trying and failing.

Anne of Green Gables

Amigurumi is a lesson in strife. We try and sometimes we win. But there are other times when we try and we fail…..miserably.

I have shed tears over difficult amigurumi patterns, but thankfully, this wasn’t one of those times. Regardless of whether we win or lose, crocheting toys is a true joy.

Interesting World

But really, Marilla, one can’t stay sad very long in such an interesting world, can one?

Anne of Green Gables

I’m constantly amazed by the talented amigurumi designers out there from all over the world.

This one is particularly interesting to me because Carla (the designer behind Amour Fou Crochet) has captured the essence of Anne in this amigurumi pattern.

Crocheting toys is something that brings so much happiness into my life. I often wonder if I’m a bit strange to be an adult to loves making toys and then I think…. who the heck cares…. it makes me (and others around me) happy.

Make Up Your Mind

It’s been my experience that you can nearly always enjoy things if you make up your mind firmly that you will.

Anne of Green Gables

This is my new motto in life. We can enjoy things, if we choose to do so.

And this pattern is so very enjoyable, you don’t even have to make up your mind to enjoy it. The directions are clear and the doll works up so very quickly.

Kindred Spirits

Kindred spirits are not so scarce as I used to think. It’s splendid to find out there are so many of them in the world.

Anne of Green Gables

The very fact that this beautiful Anne of Green Gables amigurumi doll pattern exists proves that kindred spirits are not so scarce.

You are reading this blog, which surely means we are kindred spirits.

The amigurumi world is full of men, women and even children who find joy in the simplest of things. We find joy in childlike activities and I can’t think of anything better than that.

Together in Spirit

True friends are always together in spirit.

Anne of Green Gables

I like imagining all the people who have crocheted this pattern. We may be from different corners of the world. We may be different ages, different races and nationalities.

But our love of amigurumi and Anne of Green Gables unites us and we are together in spirit.

Laughter

Life is worth living as long as there’s a laugh in it.

Anne of Green Gables

Amigurmi, by its very nature, brings laughter. This Anne of Green Gables doll reminds me of some of the hysterical predicaments that Anne found herself in over and over again.

Remember the raspberry cordial incident with Diana?

Or the time she tried to dye her hair black?

Ambition

Oh, it’s delightful to have ambitions. I’m so glad I have such a lot. And there never seems to be any end to them– that’s the best of it. Just as soon as you attain to one ambition you see another one glittering higher up still. It does make life so interesting.

Anne of Green Gables

I do believe that amigurumi is an ambitious endeavour. No, it’s not rocket science. You don’t need a fancy degree to be able to do it.

But being able to make a beautiful doll with your own two hands is something to be proud of. I think many times makers downplay their own skills. I know I do that myself.

We are taught to be humble and not to boast, but it’s ok to be proud of our accomplishments. Anne sure was.

Mistakes

“But have you ever noticed one encouraging thing about me, Marilla? I never make the same mistake twice.”

“I don’t know as that’s much benefit when you’re always making new ones.”

Anne of Green Gables

I love Aunt Marilla almost as much as I love Anne.

When making amigurumi we are going to make mistakes. The great thing about this pattern is that we aren’t likely to make too many.

The directions are perfectly clear and the techniques are very straightforward. I like that in a pattern.

Scope for the Imagination

Isn’t it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive–it’s such an interesting world. It wouldn’t be half so interesting if we know all about everything, would it? There’d be no scope for imagination then, would there? But am I talking too much? People are always telling me I do. Would you rather I didn’t talk? If you say so I’ll stop. I can stop when I make up my mind to it, although it’s difficult.”

Anne of Green Gables

Another thing I love about amigurumi is that there are so many interesting things to learn. We will never know everything there is to know.

There are always new skills to learn and new stitches to try. I completely agree with Anne that learning new things makes the world such an interesting place.

Dear, Friend

“‘Dear old world’, she murmured, ‘you are very lovely, and I am glad to be alive in you.‘”

Anne of Green Gables

And I am so very glad you are here, dear friend. Even if we never get to meet in person, know that I think of you often.

It’s a wonderful thing to be able to share the fun and the challenge of amigurumi with all of you.

Have you ever crocheted an Anne of Green Gables amigurumi doll before?

Put is on your bucket list to visit the entire county, a visit you will not regret!!!

  3. Hello,
I’ve tried this pattern in cotton and it’s a bit stiff looking. What kind of yarn did you use if you don’t mind me asking. I also fell in love with the television series with Megan Follows and Jonathan Crombie! I was heartbroken when he died a few years ago. He was a wonderful actor.

I wanted to ask you if you can help me and tell what colors did you use? I want to make this doll for my friend who just found out about her diagnoses from the doctor. We live far away from each and I really want to support her in every way. I thought that if I make her this doll it will bring a little bit of joy and good feeling in her life. Thank you.

    1. What a lovely gift. I used Berroco Vintage in the colors Buttercream and Pumpkin. I cannot remember what I used for the others! But Berroco Vintage has a lot of beautiful heathered colors and I think they look great for Anne! 🧡🧡🧡
