Crochet Granny Ripple Blanket

I just finished one of my favorite mindless crochet projects ever. (And when I say just finished, I mean I finished it yesterday).

This is the Crochet Granny Ripple Blanket and I followed a tutorial from Hooked by Robin. This is one of the simplest patterns to memorize. Once you make the first row you don’t have to watch the video again until you get to the border.

I love that it’s simple granny clusters of three double crochets, but there’s that little ripple that gives the project some interest and fun.

Even though this project is super simple, it doesn’t look like it. I love projects like that. This is a beginner friendly project, but it still looks sophisticated.

Yarn for Granny Ripple Blanket

For my blanket I used Caron Macchiato Cakes in the colors:

  • Whisper (2 skeins) – beautiful creamy, off white with hues of gray and beige
  • Boundless (1 skein) – gold, charcoal, and rust with sections of deep eggplant (my favorite)
  • Lovely (1 skein) – pinks with rust and maroon shades
  • Sunny (1 skein) – pinks, mustard with hints of brown

These colors are beautiful and I love the subtle color variation. They remind me of Noro, which is a much more expensive yarn.

It’s 80% acrylic and 20% wool and it has a lovely feel to it. It’s soft, but not slippery soft and has a lovely halo.

I bought these cakes at Michaels and I was able to order them online, use a 30% off coupon and then pick them up in the store.

Troubleshooting Caron Macchiato Cakes

I love the feel and look of this yarn, but that slight halo causes one slight issue.

When frogging (or ripping out stitches) be sure to just pull one stitch at a time. If you try to rip it out quickly, the fibers will bunch up and get into a tangled mess.

But pulling out each stitch one-by-one got the job done.

Granny Ripple Blanket Border

For the border I followed the first round of the Granny Ripple Blanket from Hooked by Robin. It finished off the edges of the blanket nicely and set me up for my favorite crochet border.

I come back to this border over and over again. I just can’t get enough of it.

This is the Pom Pom Edging tutorial from Bella Coco. It can be a bit of a yarn hog, but I am obsessed with how it finishes off a blanket.

The pom poms give the blanket a bit of a playful feel. These gorgeous colors could make it feel quite serious and stuffy, but I think the little pom poms give the whole project a fun and cheerful look.

I also like that it adds a bit of texture and movement. It adds that “WOW” factor.

Basically I love it and will keep using this border until I can’t crochet any more.

Diamond Stitch Blanket

This next blanket is one of the best examples of mindless crochet projects. If you’re able to make a chain and double crochet, you will have no problems making this blanket. You can make is as big or as small as you want.

The Diamond Stitch Blanket from Happy in Red is colorful and bright. It’s also a fantastic stash buster as you can make it in any color you already have. What’s even better is that it’s a free pattern.

She does recommend a soft DK weight yarn like Stylecraft Special DK.

This is one of my favorite yarns for crochet blankets. It’s soft and comes in SO MANY DIFFERENT COLORS. It’s an affordable yarn and is quite versatile for so many different projects. It’s no wonder it’s really popular for making blankets.

I also love that it’s 100% acrylic and you can toss it into the washer and dryer. I’ve made several different blankets with this yarn and they look just as good as the day I made them even after several washes.

I really like how the designer Ester alternated the white with the colors. It really helps to keep the blanket from being dark and heavy feeling.

Changing the colors could easily turn into a seasonal, holiday or even a baby shower blanket. I’m talking myself into making this one!

Happiness Shawl

Next we have the Happiness Shawl by Tine Sommer Hansen for Hobbii. This is a fantastic mindless crochet project for those times when you’re not in the mood to commit to a full blanket, but you still want something cozy, relaxing, and beautiful to work on.

The free pattern uses simple, repetitive stitches that are easy to memorize, which means you can just zone out, enjoy the rhythm of your hook, and watch your shawl grow without constantly checking the pattern. It’s the kind of project that feels peaceful and satisfying—plus, you end up with a wearable piece that’s just as comforting to make as it is to use.

Hobbii recommend the yarns:

  • Sultan Deluxe – a wonderfully soft 100% cotton cake yarn
  • Twister – soft cake yarn with stunning color transitions

Windsurfer Shawl

Our next project is another gorgeous project, the Windsurfer Shawl. Now you may be thinking that I’ve chosen a project that isn’t mindless. The Windsurfer Shawl does look complicated but it’s not.

It’s a combination of the Moss Stitch and two different colors of Scheepjes Whirl. It’s a 60% cotton, 40% acrylic, fingering weight yarn. This extra large yarn cake holds 1000 meters and 226 grams!

Johanna from Mijo Crochet has done an amazing job of creating a shawl that strikes that perfect balance—it’s mindless in the best way, with a soothing stitch pattern you can settle into without overthinking.

But it’s also sophisticated enough to look like you put in way more effort than you actually did. Her eye for texture and shape makes this design feel elegant and elevated, even though it’s made with simple, repetitive stitches. It’s the kind of project that lets you relax while you’re making it—but when you wear it, it looks like something from a boutique.

My First Blanket

Don’t discount making beginner crochet projects just because you can crochet more difficult patterns. Sometimes your nervous system needs a true break.

I recently learned a new term called Therapeutic Laziness. This is phrase that describes the idea of intentionally slowing down or doing something low-effort because it’s good for your mental health. It’s not about being unproductive in a negative way—it’s about giving yourself permission to rest, unwind, and do something gentle or comforting, especially when life feels overwhelming.

That’s why I love the My First Blanket Tutorial from Crochet With Tiffany. This tutorial walks you through how to crochet this gorgeous chunky, textured blanket.

Tiffany recommends using Cascade Cherub Chunky, which is a number 5 bulky weight, acrylic nylon blend. It comes in so many gorgeous colors and I think this looks so calming in the taupe color she used, but I also think it could look gorgeous in this Ecru color.

I have found when my mind really needs a break, I love having a video tutorial. I don’t want to think, I just want someone to tell me what to do.

Tiffany guides you through the blanket step-by-step, and it honestly feels like you’re crocheting with a friend.

But she also has a written pattern for those of you who prefer that method.

Windowpane Granny Square Crochet Blanket

Now, maybe you’re looking for something a little different. You love mindless, but you don’t want it to be completely mindless. I got you.

The Windowpane Granny Square Crochet Blanket is a newish pattern by Briana K Designs. This blanket incorporates two granny square panels and a granny stitch center section.

This pattern comes in 7 different sizes and you’ll find a video tutorial plus a written pattern.

Briana is using two different yarns for this project:

The Windowpane Crochet Granny Square Blanket is perfect for those times when you want something mindless—but not too mindless. You still get that soothing repetition of granny stitches, but the added windowpane design granny squares keeps things just interesting enough to hold your attention.

It’s great for when you’re feeling a little restless but still want the comfort of an easy, go-with-the-flow project.

Chunky Haven Throw

The next mindless crochet project is the Chunky Haven Throw from Jewels and Jones. This one is absolutely gorgeous. And the amazing part is that it only requires two stitches: single crochet and double crochet.

Nicky is using Hue & Me from Lion Brand in the color Salt. It’s a bulky weight blend of 80% acrylic and 20% wool.

Find Hue & Me Here

One of the unique feature of this yarn is that it has a carefully curated color palette. The shades are designed to coordinate effortlessly, so you can mix and match colors without worrying about clashing tones.

What I love about this blanket is that it’s beginner friendly with only a one row repeat (so it’s easy on the brain). Plus you’ll find the free pattern and a video tutorial!

Speedy Granny Ruth Crochet Blanket

The Speedy Granny Ruth blanket might be the perfect mindless crochet project. First, it’s a one row repeat, meaning that you just make the same row over and over again.

It also naturally has straight edges so you don’t even need to add a border!

What’s really nice is that Christa shows you how to make this baby blanket with DK or worsted weight yarn. Another really amazing thing about it is that she will also demonstrate how to fix the blanket if you miss a stitch without having to redo any rows!

It’s a free pattern plus a video tutorial!

Beautiful Shells Baby Blanket

The next mindless crochet project is one of my favorites. It’s a gorgeous shell stitch baby blanket designed by Marie of Adore Crea Crochet. What’s nice about it is that if you can make it as small or as large as you like, just by adding rounds.

This project uses a combination of shell and single crochet stitches and it has a vintage, elegant feel.

When looking through the comments of the video tutorial so many people mentioned how much they enjoyed making this project and how clear the instructions are. In fact many beginners said they had no problem making it! Plus I saw several comments that this is an addictive project, which in my mind makes it perfectly mindless.

This is the first time I’ve come across Adore Crea Crochet and not only does she have a lovely YouTube channel, but make sure to check out her website. She has many beautiful free patterns. I love her style.

Crochet Heart Stitch

The last blanket is one of my most favorite mindless crochet projects! The Crochet Heart Stitch Blanket by Play Hooky With Me is perfect when you need a simple project, but you don’t want it to look like it!

She’s using one of my favorite yarns from WeCrochet:

Find Comfy Worsted Here

This is a great yarn for blankets because it’s 75% Pima Cotton and 25% acrylic so it has the look of cotton, but it has a little stretch from the acrylic. It’s also an incredibly soft yarn with fantastic stitch definition.

You can really see that in the little heart stitches.

In the video tutorial introduction Roz mentions that she enjoyed stitching up the sample that she didn’t want to stop. She also mentioned that once you memorize the stitch pattern it flies off the hook.

The project is worked with single and double crochets, so even though this looks complicated, it isn’t!
